Original paintings by Valerie Ladewig
Valerie Ladewig was born in Escanaba, Michigan, to Harvey and Dorothy Spade on February 18, 1928. She was the fourth child of six siblings. Valerie and her siblings were all very close; they grew up always supporting each other.
Valerie’s love of art and drawing started at the age of five or six. Her first formal art class was at a local rec department, where she had to walk a mile back and forth to participate. She remembers the instructor, Mr. Morrow. Valerie really enjoyed taking his class, which helped her realize that art was something she excelled in. In high school, Valerie remembers a teacher named Mrs. GrandStover, who really nurtured her love of drawing and painting.
At about 18 years old, Valerie and her sisters moved to Milwaukee in search of jobs. Valerie also met her future husband in Milwaukee. Raymond and Valerie were married a few years later on September 10, 1949. As the newlyweds started having children, Valerie never stopped loving to draw and Paint. After having about seven children, she decided to take a mail in art class which helped refine her skills. Raymond and Valerie then proceeded to have five more babies for a grand total of 12 children.
As their children got older, Valerie was able to have more free time to draw and paint. She worked as a freelance artist on many things. She was commissioned to paint Murals for multiple private businesses, such as restaurants and office buildings. Raymond and Valerie built a house and moved to Wind Lake, Wisconsin, where later on in her 80s, she taught community art classes in Wind Lake and Muskego. Her students loved her original way of allowing them to express their creativity. Valerie is currently 96 years old, soon to be 97 on February 18, and continues to create and paint pieces of art, mostly showing her love for our Lord Jesus Christ.
